Despite being known for its world-famous cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego, most of the territory of California is in fact rural or uninhabited. Because of its varied terrain and climates that include snow-capped mountains, parched deserts, and vast forests, the urbanized areas tend to be concentrated in three regions. One is the Central Valley, where cities servicing the agricultural and industrial needs of the state are located. Another is the Bay Area, where Silicon Valley and its associated cities are located. The final one is the southern coast, where sprawling metros are pinned in by a nearby mountain range.
