Austria is a landlocked country in the center of Europe. Vienna has historically been regarded as the gateway to Eastern Europe. The country shares a border with four modern countries in the Eastern region, in addition to the four that it shares with the countries of the Western region. Its border with Liechtenstein, at only 21 miles long, barely registers on most maps. The border with Germany is nearly 500 miles long, and much more noticeable.
