The center of the earth is estimated to be over 6,000 Celsius; as hot as the surface of the sun. Despite the heat, it is composed of solid nickel and iron because the contents are under so much pressure. Just beyond the inner core, however, the contents are mostly liquid metal; again mostly nickel and iron. The other layers of the Earth are most solid rock, but they are not necessarily stable. Instead, they move around in large pieces and occasionally cause earthquakes all the way on the surface.
